Harry Potter play breaks Olivier Awards record

Theater production ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ makes history after becoming the most nominated new play in the Olivier Awards.

Theater production ‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ has made history after becoming the most nominated new play in the Laurence Olivier Awards.

London’s two-part Harry Potter production, written by Jack Thorne, received 11 Olivier Award nominations, including best actor and best new play.

As one of the most wildly popular plays in living memory, the Harry Potter production imagines Harry, Hermione and Ron as adults sending their children to Hogwarts School.

Critics hailed the theater production as a producers’ dream play – both crazily popular and adored by critics.

“The thing with Harry Potter is that it didn’t need to be good ... it’s Harry Potter. But it does have true artistic integrity ... it was a big surprise,” said theater expert Mark Shenton, who added that the theater piece “truly captivated its audience.”

‘Harry Potter and the Cursed Child’ has been sold out for at least a year in London. The play will also be performed on Broadway, New York, where it is due to open in the spring of 2018.

The awards nominations for the UK event include three of the actors that include Noma Dumezweni, who plays Hermione, Jamie Parker for his portrayal of Harry as an adult, and Anthony Boyle, who plays Scorpius Malfoy.

The awards ceremony, which was established in 1976 and this year’s awards ceremony will take place at the Royal Albert Hall in London on April 9.
